He licked at his dry, cracked lips. Even now, standing, looking down at her, final,y having moved after so many hours of standing still, he felt like he was ready to sleep. Vaas had to force his red eyes open as he stared at her silently, just as she stared at him. The pelt he had wrapped atop of her fit her nicely, it was a perfectly length for her body. Large, really large. He figured that even if she grew, the pelt would still cover her well, the necessity to have to hunt another animal in order to provide her with some warmth wouldn't come for a long time.
Her unmoving silence combined with his created an air of mutual respect amongst the two in Vaas' mind. His stomach growled but he ignored it. Finally he stretched out his legs a bit and forced himself to once more sit directly opposite of where the girl sat. He gave her a cold yet warm unwavering and almost unblinking gaze as he accommodated himself on the grass and dirt, feeling at it for a few seconds with the palm of his right hand before crossing his legs in front of him. Vaas sat with his back straight and placed his hands gently on his knees. He bit the inside of his lip and slowly brought his left hand up, placing it against his chest, and spoke.
"Vaas," he said in his regularly accented deep voice, and pulled away his hand from his chest before once again pressing it to him. "Vaas," he repeated, and tapped at himself, trying to get his message across. Although he felt strange doing this, never being one to communicate first most of the time, and after that he didn't do another thing like that. His eyes scanned her, however, picking out the details of her eyes now that they were literally feet away from each other. Her gaze made him shiver, partly with delight, partly with sorrow, and he was confused as to why.
In the back of his head, Vaas told himself that it was a bad idea to have brought the girl, much less keep her around for as long as he intended to keep her around.
And that was the thing. She would have to stay with him now. They were in the middle of nowhere, pretty much days walk away from civilization. The only food she would get would be the food he hunted for her, the clothing would be the one he got for her, and her safety would be the one that he gave her. Vaas purposely brought her into this environment for that reason, because he knew that she would end up being dependent solely on him for survival. The risk of her wanting to leave him was lower than if he would have stayed in a populated urban center. Risk and reward. He risked bringing her to a hazardous environment, his reward being that she would not leave. Thus Vaas would learn of her, and hopefully come to a conclusion as to why he was drawn to her.
His eyes flicked to the side. Leaning over, he took an apple he had stolen when he got her, had it cleaned in the crystal river, and placed it gently on leaves so that dirt wouldn't get on its surface. He picked it up easily with his large hand, the fruit easily fitting inside the palm of his hand, and then moved it. He cautiously placed it in front of the girl, at a spot where it would sit on the grass, so dirt would not contaminate it. The fruit was clean, a bright and healthy red, and was plump with juice. Vaas had almost been tempted to eat it himself.
"Food," he spoke, and pulled himself back a bit so she could understand that it was for her, and not himself, "food eatings, no?" He almost bit his lip with his struggling grasp of the English language, although he did his best to remember what he had been taught. "Energies, much getting." His words were slow and paced out in between each and every one. His sentences took much longer to formulate than what they should, and it left Vaas flustered and frustrated internally.

She felt gross. Uncentered. Filthy and undeserving of this niceness. As she watched him struggle through his words she bit her lower lip and looked down at her lap. The bed was warm and soft and she felt like a bitch for keeping him from what was his. In a way she expected him to hit her and treat her like an animal. Kick her off and away from his belongings.
So she sat tensed yet limp, feeling too weak to put up a fight and waited for him to be angered by her. It's what she was used to anyways.

Seeing her not move and not do anything, Vaas reached forwards and owned the apple further in her direction, nudging it before pulling back once more. He knew that she was hungry and wanted her to have a meal, vans she was human. She needed to eat. She needed to get energy. Where he lived was a harsh environment not exactly suited for a girl like her. She needs to stay full of energy.
Vaas nudged his head softly at her, and waited, watching with cold yet slightly warm eyes.

Itty's head was spinning and she felt like she was overloading even though nothing in specific was filling her mind. The pounding from the several wounds in her head didn't help the situation one bit, nor did the slight fever that spread across her skin and painted her usually pale skin a light shade of pink. She felt dirty and could smell the sweet wet coppery smell of her dried and damp blood and her nose would twitch lightly when that odor would over come the smell of the tree's, grass, and nature around her.
Even after he nudged the shiny clean apple towards her she refused to move. Well, it was less refusal on her behalf and more of a lack of understanding. Her body and mind felt delayed in what was currently happening around her and while he was staring at her wondering, she was now realizing that she wasn't really lone out here in what she'd originally felt was surrounding solitude. Sighing deeply, Itty moved her hands across the pet that covered her lap. The sigh was the first hint of sound she'd given since she woke up and in fact, it was the first thing she'd let out of here lips aside from the yelps of pain while she had gotten beaten.
Then all of a sudden her eyes were on Vaas, looking into his own with honey colored intensity that made her previously dilated pupils constrict to two pinpoints, as she pinned him under her gaze. Any other child would be squirming, moving, crying, or even asking questions but she simply stared at him with a neutral look that made her seem far older then what she was. Then again, she never reacted according to norm. Itty slowly blinked, holding her eyes shut longer then usual, the pounding in her head making her ears ring and when she finally opened her eyes, her pupils returned to their previous dilated form before she looked away from him and finally, after a couple of potentially awkward minutes, she finally felt caught up to the world around her.
Then, she realized that she awkwardly hadn't moved in so long and her cheeks flushed a deep shade of red. Now she was stuck on what to do herself, not knowing if she should grab the apple or leave it there. But furthermore, she realized that an introduction was in need and awkwardly hanging in the air due to her lack of over all response to the curret situation. Shaking her head slightly she held her hand up in the air, palm out to him, as if telling him to hold on. It wasn't like he was rushing her or talking a lot or moving around. In fact, his calmness amazed her and made her want to move closer to him.
But she simply felt overwhelmed and in order to just get it done with, she pointed to him and scooted over to the dirt. Making a 'V' on the ground with her bloodied fingers, she pointed to him. Telling him that his name started with the letter. She then made a circle on the ground and pointed to herself, having left the center empty. She was moving too fast to think on what she was doing and why she was so frustrated and upset.
Leaning forward she circled his name and pointed to him before retracing her own circle and pointed to her. Then, out of instinct she sloppily wrote the name Itty on the ground outside of the circle and pointed to herself. Blushing, she deflated and continued tracing each letter of her given name, Itty. She wasn't stupid, she knew what it meant and she knew why it was given to her. Because she was weird, an outcast, a gross stain to a picture. She was an it and she was also itty bitty in size, smaller then the rest of the kids. The runt.
She didn't realize when or why it started but her wondering fingers turmed into hard rubs at the ground then hard wipes. Then before she knew what was happening, she was silently sobbing while attacking the ground in front of her. Every pent up emotion that she'd felt towards that place and those people came rushing out of her at once in the form of silent rage and pounding fists and tears.

Vaas' silence was something more out of curious judgement than of respectful silence, although he did not let this show at first. Then, it turned into something he figured was empathy, or at least the equivalent of that emotion that he could muster. Him with his dulled emotional responses, who simply stared in silence as she let it be known that the encircled letter was a representation of his name. He caught on quickly, very easily knowing where this was going as soon as she created an empty circle, pointing at herself. He sat up straighter than what he already was and watched without blinking. For a few seconds he would look at her eyes, judge the emotional reactions going on in her face. Then the next few seconds he would look at the ground to see something new, a new letter that began to spell a name outside of the empty circle she had created.
Itty.
Even he, in his very lackluster grasp of the English language, could tell that this name was not meant to an endearment. Way before her emotional outburst he knew that this was a title that was not to be proud of. It was as if a moment had occurred in a blink of an eye, where he had glanced over at the apple for a split of a second. She was now crying, sobbing as anger-fueled hands pounded and rubbed away the name on he dirt.
Vaas stood up, maintaining his ground, and looked down at her, watching her silently, not bothering to interfere with this... Emotional outburst he had not been used to. He could not help but wonder on how ridiculous she seemed. Yet, near the back of his mind, he could faintly recall himself reacting in such a childish manner to a family member of his. He shuddered every so slightly, and finally his eyes settled their gaze on the dirt, and his mind recalled the last five minutes as he stood silently, the sun searing his bare back. It came to him in a sudden instant, the revelation nearly knocking him off his feet and to the ground. Everything around her hands and the small patch of dirt where one could feintly see a trace of a circle became a blur, worthless to his mind's eye.
Itty's hands, frail thin fingers, slowly and silently tracing at the dirt in order to communicate with him without her having to say a single word, seemed to take the form of Ellie's. From the way the palm of her hand seemed to ever so slightly hover over the ground, to the manner by which her index finger would curve slightly from left to right as it grazed softly against the ground. Vaas had memorized such very minute details to the point where they had been branded into his memory. He was watching Itty, and he knew he was, but he was also seeing a dead person .
It made him take a step back. In his head, this connection had felt as if it had taken centuries to come across and relate with. However, the truth was that only a few seconds had gone by since he had stood. His gaze unfocused and once mor he looked at Itty as a whole, her childish outburst suddenly not feeling so childish after all.
She was young, and she had been mistreated to a point that it impacted her life, the outlook on herself, negatively. Vaas saw this easily, and related almost immediately. To have someone do you wrong at such a young age. Call you by a derogatory name for so long that you start to believe it to be real. He stared, unmoving, his face not shifting expression despite all these thoughts going on in his head.
Finally, he got down to a low crouch, not bothering to sit for he knew that he would be moving soon. Vaas did not bother trying to reach out and comfort her, or to tell her that she was safe now. He had no idea what the words would be in her language, much less did he feel like speaking. Slowly, however, he extended out the index finger of his right hand, and drew a slightly larger circle than the ones that Itty had made. Within that circle, in slow yet careful movements, he wrote out his name perfectly upsidedown so that she would be able to read it. 'Vaas', it said. Then, directly under his name, he spelt out what she had called herself. 'Itty'.
He retraced the circle around the two names once more, deepening it, darkening. Without looking up at her, Vaas stood once more up on his feet. He didn't wait for any response from her, neither a reaction nor a peep of her voice. He turned, looked up sideways to the sky, towards the sun, then paced to the river.
Someone needs to catch their meal for the night.

Itty.
For Itty Bitty. Like small, because she was small. Small and odd and looked like an it. Maybe it had been the swelling and purple bruising on her broken lips from the footprint that had been left behind on her mouth. After all, she cried too much at night and for someone who had anger problems, she'd triggered a violent outrage because she -on purpose- would sob and scream for an escape when she had no idea where she found herself. As a child, she should have had better control of herself.
Itty.
That name echoed in her mind, twisting and turning in her head to mock the tone and voice of everyone who'd ever uttered it in her direction. It continued to echo along with the memory of every hit she'd ever taken and every time she'd ever been knocked down and she swore to the Gods that she hated herself. She hated herself and everything she had become because she might as well have been an It. She couldn't remember a single detail or smell that came before the moment that she woke up from her six month long coma. She was as much of a stranger to herself as she was a stranger to anyone else.
It felt like she was just here, an open book ready to be written and created by anyone that came along. They often debated on her age, her name, her story, and she couldn't do anything. She was useless, weak, to even open her mouth and defend herself! There was, ultimately, nothing to defend.
She was too young to carry such a weight on her shoulders.
All these thoughts felt like they could drown her. However, she couldn't even begin to focus on one before her attention was dragged to another. It didn't matter because at that moment Itty was lost in a wave of blurry vision and numb limbs that tingled painfully as her fist collided with the disturbed dirt on the ground.
Itty wouldn't have snapped out of it, if she wouldn't have seen his tanned big hand out of the corner of her eye. The sudden invasion made her jump and turn to the side, bringing her arms and legs up to protect her body from the impact that was sure to come. She was tensed, trembling, and biting her tongue. Her previous fit long forgotten as her body automatically responded to Vaas the way it would respond to anyone who would move that close to her. She was waiting for the impact and in all honesty, she only ever lasted two or three hits before her arms fell down useless besides her and her face took the rest of the punishment.
She was terrified at the moment and as the seconds turned into long tensed filled minutes, she began wondering if they were waiting for her to remove her hands before she was hit. But she couldn't just do that, or so she thought. Because when ten more minutes passed, Itty realized that the tense anticipation was far worst then anything else and she removed her hands from her face, kept her eyes shut, but nothing happened either then.
Slowly, she opened her eyes and was shocked to see that she was alone. The dirt soften and rearranged in front of her and the image that laid before her made her let out a hiccup as she busted unto a fit of ugly sobs and uncontrollable crying.
By the time Vaas would reappear, Itty would be laying in a heap on the floor. Knocked out cold with stained cheeks and fingers.

When Vaas came back, soaked from head to toe in river water, dripping, with two large fish killed clean with a knife he had carved out of the bone of a wolf he had killed - the same wolf he got his pelt from - he paused, blinked, and looked down at the bundle that was the small girl. It was clear that she had been crying more even after he left, though his time underwater wouldn't have allowed him to hear, even with his more attuned senses. Vaas could not help himself but to simply stare for the longest time, without much thought going through his mind, trying to imagine what it was that had gone through her head. Troubles, definitely, but he could not truly begin to comprehend what kinds of troubles they would be.
His eyes glanced to his left. A small sigh left his lips as he knelt down, slowly placing the fish on a clean patch of grass where not too much dirt would get on it. Not that it would matter much, he still needed to prepare them before cooking. Vaas took a deep breath, glancing at the girl for a few moments, before reaching over to the circle he had drawn. Her name, he saw, had been rubbed out, rather carefully however. The circle was intact and so was her name. He wondered for a second, looked at her fingers, and nodded slowly, softly, and understandingly.
His large, rough hand slowly rubbed itself over the circle and over his name. He could feel the dirt under his hand rub back and forth with the motion of his hand, until finally he lifted it to see that it was gone.
Vaas got to work slowly but efficiently without bothering to try to wake her up until after the food was almost ready. Though he wouldn't complain if she awoke to the noises he created. Lighting a small flame that quickly grew in size as he gutted the fish and prepared it for cooking, setting all the trash off away from them to avoid the smell, more for his sake than hers.
He sqwered the fish one at a time, and got to cooking slowly, a rather plesant aroma he had come to enjoy very quickly enveloping the area they were at. He sat close to the fire, legs crossed under his body, as he stared at it in silence and thought.
Peace, he thought. What it will be like with her here now?

She hadn't meant to fall asleep. But her head had been throbbing so painfully hard and with all her crying her chest also hurt. It felt overwhelming for her to even breathe at one point and so the fact that she soon found consciousness after he left shouldn't have been such a surprise to her. But with everything that was happening to her, she was unsure and felt unsafe so it wasn't a surprise that after she woke up, by the second blink, she was already silently freaking out.
She jumped up and dragged herself from any movement that she saw out of the corner of her eye and it wasn't until she blinked a couple of more times that she mentally took her surroundings in and noticed that she was in no immediate danger. Her skin felt tight and her clothing felt crusty and they smelled overwhelmingly of copper. Even for her human senses, the rags that she wore were something that needed to just be burned.
Her stomach complained in hunger but the apple that she was given remained untouched and she had no plans of touching it either. No, itty would have shared that apple with him, but she was too covered in filth to touch the apple and feel comfortable handing it back to him so that he could eat the rest. If anything, she would have felt one hundred times better if he would have been the one to take the first half and hand him his leftovers.
This Vaas person seemed to kind to her and while the gesture made her want to cry all over again- she wasn't used too it and therefore was suspicious by nature. Her cheeks reddened slightly at the sounds coming from her rude stomach, although through the layers of blood and filth, her embarrassment was hard to catch on too. Still, she looked over at him and then at the remains of the fishes that he currently found himself cooking and while they smelled delicious and she was starving her attention was focused elsewhere.
If he had fish there must have been maybe a store nearby or even a house. Regardless both sounded like a place she'd like to visit so that she could at least wash her hand and her head. The dried blood only made her already heavy head of hair even heavier and every time she moved it stung. Her eyes focused more on the scales of the fish, and she shifted in angry frustration because she didn't know how to ask him if there was a place she could go clean herself up.
She didn't even know how to tell him that she felt thankful for his kindness.

Vaas spared only a single glance upwards when he saw out of the corner of his eyes that she was relatively up and about. He made no attempt to talk to her nor reach out for her, as he probably felt like he should have done. Rather, he merely acknowledged her continued precense abd accepted it as an active part of his surroundings, something he had no problems with, even though he knew that his continued silence would give off the wrong message. He figured it was just another thing she would have to learn to live with if she was to stay by his side for a short while.
There was a bit of hesitation, and his mind drew a blank as he stared at the open flames licking at the scaleless flesh of his, their, dinner. The skin slowly shifed from a soft and fleshy pink to a dull golden brown. With two fingers he easily teared off a small piece of meat and ate it, before nodding softlt at himself as a confirmation that it was going to be safe to eat. Not for him, of course. Vaas had no problem feasting on the rawest of flesh, straight from a fresh kill. It would not hurt him. But for her instead, for in the short time he spent living with another human, he learned how susceptible to sickness humans were to raw flesh if ingested.
It was almost laughable. But... he wasn't ever one to laugh.
Once he stoked the fire, prolonging the flames in order for them to last at least halfway through the night, Vaas finally gave one long and full look at the girl. Nameless, apparently, for she refused to be called by the name she was mocked under. Vaas himself had no clue on what he would refer to her by, but then again that was in the least of his worries. At least, it seemed, the girl had the common sense to understand something written on dirt and sand. There were two fish, one for each of them, and without saying much but a soft grunt, he took the hottest of the two and placed it on a soft patch of grass directly in front of her. The second he took by the tail.
"Slow," he commented, slowly. Unsure if she was aware or not, he pulled some of the meat apart with his fingers and snapped one of the bones out, pulling it up into the light to show her the somewhat translucent small fragment of bone. "Easy. Danger. Uh... no breath." Each word came out with large gaps of silence, of thinking, between each other, and was so heavily accented ot would've been hard to understand had he been talking proper full sentences. His grasp on the English language being worse off than before, Vaas stopped and figured she would understand what he had meant.
His eyes looked down, back to the fire, and for a few short seconds he thought to himself in silence, before going back to taking bite after medium sized bite of his fish.
All of the sudden, he felt as if he was forcing himself to eat, not really enjoying his meal anymore.
