Age 10
Nick was always a busy body. He was always exploring and checking things out. His favorite place to go was to the recreational center where Jason taught them to swim. Alexander seemed as if he was going to be leaving soon which made Nick sad. Sure it was fun playing getting on Jason’s nerves but Alex was more of a father figure while Jason was the big brother. There was also Darian but Darian was still a stranger to him.
As he and his siblings grew, he’d been noticing some small changes within himself and it scared him. Despite his fear though, he was too embarrassed to tell anyone. His skin was always itchy, his senses were sharpened and he was constantly hot as if he was burning from the inside out. To hide this, he’d go to the pool for hours trying to find solace from the changes going on in his body. It helped immensely, but at the same time he felt something something dark beneath all of that and it was apparent whenever he was in the pool.
It would throb and cause him to be sick. There were such bad thoughts that would race through his mind. With each throb the darkness felt like it was trying to spread as it stretched and grew. Images of him hurting his sister and brother plagued him. At first it was a small inkling to hurt them. Like they could be outside playing and a small voice told him to push his sister to the ground or to push his brother into a ditch. He’d always ignored it though because he loved his siblings dearly and would rather protect them rather than hurt them. These thoughts confused him and scared him though he wouldnt tell anyone for fear of being punished and of what the others might think of him.
Nick was currently out running trying to wear out the excessive energy in his system but today it just seemed to increase rather than decrease and he was becoming ravenous. The night was clear showing the dancing stars as they kept the moon company. She was full and beautiful showering the forest in her gentle luminescents. He seemed transfixed by her dazzling beauty as her moonlight gently caressed his irritated skin.
A feral growl slipped out and tore his eyes away from Luna. A smile played on his lips as he caught the scent of prey. It was a jack rabbit. The knowledge caused his excitement to grow. He knew from his lessons with Jason and Alex, the fundamental basics of hunting. He also knew from his own exploration that jack rabbits were the best toys, that is until Monster decided to eat them.
At the thought of the Iberian lynx, he wondered where the cat had gone. The thought lasted for only a moment when the itching began under his skin. This time it was ten times worse. It was worse than the time he’d been playing and fell into a bed of poison ivy. Jason had laughed, though thankfully Alex had helped him. Soon it felt like fire was racing through his veins and he cried out in pain and fear. His bones ache, especially his jaw. His teeth felt like they were too small for his mouth. His vision kept changing back and forth as if trying to adjust themselves constantly.
He could no longer keep up with the scent he had been chasing as his mind focused on the pain his entire body was going through. His breathing hitched as the pain grew worse and the fire became hotter in his veins. He fell to his hands and knees, screaming as every nerve screamed in agony from his bones breaking and skin tearing, even as it regenerates. He felt as if he was going to die. He could hear someone coming but felt like they were in the far distance.
His skull literally felt like it was splitting apart. His eyes flashed white and for a moment, he thought he’d actually died because he seen the Spirit world.
The atmosphere was one of peace and tranquility. He looked up at the sky and gasped. It was the richest blue and violet. The clouds seemed like foam from waves but stars could be seen dancing in-between them as if they had a life of their own and were sentient beings. He sensed a huge presence fast approaching and fear began to build. Out of nowhere, this huge whale like creature sprung from the dying embers on the horizon and into the very sky. It sang a beautiful song as swam among the clouds.
The whale like creature was iridescent blue pink and purple. It sported four flippers on each side and had two tails that was reminiscent of the tail and fins of a king crowntail beta fish. There were other other smaller sea creatures that seemed to swim alongside it. The sight was beyond beautiful and frankly more than his mind could comprehend.
He looked around him and saw many buildings and a mixture of many creatures milling about that he had never seen before. They were of varying shapes and sizes. This place seemed to be similar to the world he lived in. He sense a really strong presence that was familiar yet unknown to him at the same time, approaching him and he turned in the direction of the presence.
He saw a warrior woman approach him with a smile. She had a rich ebony brown complexion and thick curly hair that sat on her shoulders. He blushed as he noticed what she actually wore which was practically nothing. She looked like she wore a bra and loincloth made of leopard skin. Her boots were knee length buffalo hide moccasins that were lined with rabbit fur. On her side she wore a large ivory and onyx knife. On her back was a quiver of arrows that were made of african pearwood and bow made of a pair of springbok horns.
Despite the intimidating war paint on her face, her face was soft as she looked at him lovingly. “You have grown so much.” She said with a motherly smile but as she grew closer, her smile turned into a deep frown and her eyes turned sad. “Oh my dear baby.” She said and gently place a hand over his heart. As soon as she did, it was as if he’d been shot in his chest. He even looked down expecting to see a gaping bloody hole.
The force of the blow pushed him back. “You cant ever come here again.” She said in pure sadness as tears fell from her golden eyes that were so similar to his siblings’ .He didnt understand why she said that and or why pain was beginning to pulse through him again. He gasped and fell backwards feeling as if he had crashed into the ground though he knew that he hadnt moved aside from the involuntary contortion of his body.
‘Dont fight it.’ NIck heard a deep rumbling voice.
“Huh?” Nick said scared. A wave of pain shot through him as his legs contorted, breaking bones and splitting his skin in the process. He cried out loud before whimpering. “Im scared.”
The voice sighed and and a presence could be felt growing nearer to him, though it wasnt like that of the women he had seen prior. This one had more of a harder edge to it. “There’s nothing for you to be scared of. This is natural for our kind, this is merely the beginning.” The voice said. It was very distinctively a male’s deep guttural voice. Soon a large hulking black beast came and stood before him. He had to be at least ten feet tall with large muscles and giant claws. His muzzle was huge and filled with razor sharp teeth, tree trunks for legs and large clawed feet. He wore black and gold plated armor with unknown markings embedded in it that seemed to glow an eerie blue hue.
He stood with hands glowing that same blue color as the armor markings. The glow seemed to take on an electrical appearance arching between both of his hands. His eyes were an electric blue as sparks seemed to come from the corners of them. His large bushy tail swaying gently as he looked at the contorting pup. His face was expressionless as he moved closer to Nick.
“Please dont hurt me.” Nick cried out in strained whisper trying to remain conscious but the pain had become too much for his little body to bare.
“Silly boy, i will not harm you. I am here to protect you.” He said calmly as he knelt down and touched Nick’s head with his glowing hands. Nick screamed but soon the muscles in his throat were being torn as he continued to shift. “I am Harafna and i am your guardian.” He said. He watched as the young boy completed his first shift before passing out.
Harafna frowned when he was unable to cleanse the taint on the child’s soul. A deep rumble filled his chest as he bent down to pick up the essence that was Nick. He held him close to his chest and sat down with him in his arms as he closed his eyes. When he reopened them, they were a sad sea green. Harafna felt a hand on his shoulder and sighed. “I know.” He opened his eyes and looked down at Nick. “i may not be able to cleanse the taint on your soul completely but i can at least lessen its effects on you, young one.” He said and protectively watched over Nick.
A lanky brown pup with sweat covered fur lay sprawled beneath a tree as he panted in his new form. He had no energy to move his tired body, so instead he simply looked up at the sky and whimpered. Soon Monster trotted up to the wolf pup and sniffed him. He licked his fur before laying next to him keeping a watchful eye on his companion.
