Jasper was heartbroken. That was the only way he could describe the pain in the center of his chest, right where that vital organ was supposed to be. In its place was a black hole, steadily consuming everything that made him who he was until there was nothing left but the sole need to search what – more like who – was lost to him.
His knuckles were broken and bloody, damaged from when he beat the floor of the Eiffel Tower’s viewing platform. Soon, his body will start the healing process until they were unblemished like before. His brain didn’t register the pain, though. Neither would it relay to him the scenery of Paris, not even as he walked alongside the river Seine or past the Louvre. His body stalked through the City of Lights, shadows and darkness trailing after him like a moth to a flame. His mind? It was back at the tower, playing the image of Jade sinking, sinking, sinking … with tears in her eyes as she told him goodbye.
She said goodbye … like she knew that this would happen.
Why didn’t she say anything?
He would have told her they would find a way to keep this from happening – whatever this was. He would have reassured her that she wouldn’t be taken away from him, that he would have done anything to make sure of that, even if it meant selling his soul.
He should have held on to her. Used every ounce of strength to pull her from that … water. He should have told her everything from the very beginning. That he was a shifter, and she was his mate. He should have spoken sweeter to her, in those final moments.
If he could travel back in time, this can all be avoided.
Would, should, and could never got anything done. He remembered his mother saying that once. Useless words, those – they lead to nothing but regret.
But he did regret. He regretted not being able to save her.
The sunset darkened into night, and night lightened into the sunrise. His body never stopped moving, though. And it wasn’t until later that he realized his body, driven by the eagle that resided alongside him, was searching for Jade. No stone was left unturned. No corner left uninspected by keen, predatory eyes. Whereas Jasper was stuck in limbo, his animal counterpart sought his life partner in hopes that maybe she had just been … transported to another place in the city.
When it was evident that Jade was nowhere to be seen, that not even her scent could be detected, Jasper changed forms and flew home. The call that tore itself from his chest was mournful, riding the wind to faraway places. In that call there was a question. One that would haunt Jasper until the end of time.
“Where are you?”
