Not surprisingly it was the pounding in her head that was literally killing her rather than the stab wound on her left hip which should have been the real culprit. She barely got away this last time, the cheap motel room that she had gotten using the last of her paycheck should have been a safe haven for her. She had only gotten it for the free breakfast it claim came with the room, and waited the whole night stressed with her stomach howling for something that wasn't basically roadkill.
She was being stalked, after making a foolish move a few towns over, a pack of boys seemed adamant in chasing her through every town she passed through. At first she hadn't worried, how long could a bunch of stupid boys go just to save face? Eve had a full paycheck, a really good one of waitressing and generous tips. She figured after a week or two, where she was constantly on the move, they would grow tired.
Eve forgot how stubborn-no how stupid-hyenas could be.
By the end of the month, her fat paycheck was basically loose change, and those four boys were still sniffing at her heels, their cracked out crackles filling the dark woods behind her, eager and excited as if they knew she was nearing the end of her rope. God were they right. Still Eve still had a few tricks under her sleeve and after ten long hours of running and using her shift to the best of its ability, Eve had finally thought she had gotten the best of them.
That was until she was on her way out of the motel room, early in the morning, ten minutes before the actual hour for breakfast when she was suddenly grabbed and dragged away, tired weak and hungry she had struggled but most of it was her just wasting more unnecessary strength. They had their fun with her, kicking and punching, the whole nasty talk complaining that she was a bitch to get but that they did finally have her, and so on until they grew tired, until the humans began to wake up, then their leader took their knife out and gave Eve a pretty extra hole where it shouldn't have been.
The fact that they didn't kill her, was just a testament to their pride, they wanted to prove to her that they were stronger than her, that they could have killed her but she wasn't even worth the effort. She snorted at that thought, not worth the effort my ass, a whole month on her ass, only to beat her up and give themselves a few laughs, make themselves and their friends think that they weren't pussies like she had called them. After they left, Eve wobbled her way back into her motel room, going straight for the shower despite the fact that she knew any second that her check out hour was on her.
She showered, bandaged the worst of the wounds with a old shirt, and dressed in clean clothing, sticking the dirt and bloodied outfit into the big backpack and realizing this was her last clean outfit. Well shit. Leaving the room once more, Eve made her way to the breakfast location only for them to tell her that they had just closed, and that if she wanted breakfast she would need to pay.
It was two days later, she had stolen some candy bars at a gas station yet it did nothing to curb her ever growing hunger. She supposed she should have taken something better, but Eve didn't even like stealing to begin with. She was good at getting new jobs before her money ran out, being chased by the hyenas, well they hadn't even given her enough time to breathe than get a job.
Her head was pounding, it hadn't stopped since she's been hit like someone's favorite punching bag, at least the stab wound had dried enough that it didn't keep gushing open each time she moved. Maybe if she had some real food, it would have been healed by now, shifter genetics were great in that department, be it as it was, Eve was beginning to feel faint. She had ditched the bookbag last night since it was just too heavy for her to carry anymore, which should have been telling to her health since the bag barely weighed ten pounds.
Now she kept stumbling onward, where was she going? Eve didn't know, the pain in her head made her eyes water, her body was starting to refuse to take the next step, refuse to continue to hold onto her human's form, it was too heavy, everything felt too heavy. The sound of distant cars was close though she still was holding on to a tree for support, gripping the bark she felt her body began giving in, like a wave everything changed, she became smaller, smaller than she should have been even in this form which was technically her smallest.
Giving up her ability to think, to move forward, Eve found herself slinking away passing out in complete exhaustion the last thing on her mind was a bloody rare steak that had her name all over it.
