(Ventia of course, of course.)
Shit, shit, shit. It was the only thought that filled her head the moment that she woke up enough to realize that she wasn't alone. Her chest was filled with a sinking feeling that she'd become all too familiar with throughout the years unfortunately. A feeling that told her that she fucked up and there wasn't an easy way out of it. What was popularly known as the walk of shame was something that she really hated going through and the moment she felt someone beside her she was already mentally cussing herself out and pretending to still be asleep to delay the inevitable.
It wasn't like there was much shame to Caroline. She did such things with mocked pride that she convinced herself half of the times that she really was as cocky as she seemed to be. However, the problem wasn't having fallen asleep next to a one night stand, no, the worst that came out of that was Caroline questioning her own taste of men. strangers she could handle easily and at the moment she wished that she was with a stranger rather then who she knew laid beside her.
She couldn't even remember how she ended up like this. The last thing she remembered was drinking away the pit in her stomach at her decision. She was fed up with her life and her situation and she was finally going to do something about it- something that didn't involve mating with someone against their will for her own personal gain. She could feel the buzz that physical contact gave her. Slowly, the more she mentally came too, the more she felt a heavy sinking feeling in her chest that she couldn't really identify.
This feeling made it so that she couldn't even come up with a good comeback to the situation. She couldn't even tell herself that she would turn around and face her reality, because she couldn't. She didn't remember seeing him, she didn't remember laying next to him, and she sure as hell didn't remember agreeing to this. What she did remember was the feeling of safety he gave her, she remembered his smell, his taste, and the sensation of being surrounded completely by him.
He was intoxicating.
The echoed series of 'shit' came back, and she was so sure that she was fucked regardless on what she decided to do. Over thinking was making her panic and not thinking at all would cause more damage. So she squeezed her eyes shut tightly while telling herself to calm down. It worked to calm the screaming in her head but did nothing to ease the butterflies in her stomach. Without much thinking, she carefully eased out of the bed, praying to whoever, that he wouldn't wake up. Slowly she crouched on the floor, so he wouldn't see her standing and rubbed her face violently before looking over at the door like it was her savior.
Then, in the best possible way, her solution to the problem was to crawl to the door in an attempt to exit the room.

((Thank you thank you >\\<))
Did he known that when he saw her last night that he would be falling asleep with her just a few hours later? That after how many months? He would finally fall asleep with her in his arms and actually find himself sleeping for once? No. Hugh didn't think that he would ever find himself in the same bed as Caroline once again. After all, she had left him in the middle of the night all that time ago.
But god was Hugh thankful that he had been wrong. Yesterday-or really just last night-was a eye opener of how much he missed her. Missed her bickering at him, going against his words just to annoy him, and hell. Her scent. The feel of her body curled next to his or her hair in his face as she twisted and turned.
Hugh had been the last one to fall asleep last night. Watching her until his lids grew so heavy that they closed on their own accord before breathing in her scent and then falling deeply asleep, with his Caroline in his embrace. It had been the best night for him in very long time.
Hugh hadn't been able to sleep without her, at first it was okay because her scent still lingered on the bedsheets but after a few days and then weeks, he could no longer smell her in the room and that was when Hugh found himself not being able to rest. He had busied himself with his job and only fell asleep after a hard workout session but even then, three or four hours was his max amount of sleep for the night.
Today? With Caroline's scent surrounding him and her warm body curled around his side like it was meant to be? Hugh had fallen into such a deep sleep that he wasn't disturbed by the slight movements that Caroline made. He had relaxed so much that his body pushed him into a deep REM sleep in order to make up for all the other nights.
Not even when the bed tipped with the weight of Caroline slipping off the bed or with the lack of warmth against his left side did Hugh awake. Why should he? In his mind, Caroline had enjoyed being with him last night. She had snuggled into his side and trailed her lips lazily against his shoulder before dozing off. When he moved a bit, she would roll over in her sleep until she was once again curled against his side. Even now, her scent still clung to him and to the bedsheets, keeping him relaxed enough to not be bother by his side becoming cold.
His beast tried urging him to wake, tried telling him that the woman whom he saw as his mate was leaving. His interference was clear in how Hugh's eyes moved underneath his eyelids, almost as if he was trying to wake himself up. But Hugh didn't pay attention to his jaguar, because Caroline's scent kept him relaxed and believing that she was still curled up next to him. That she still wanted to be with him. That she wouldn't want to leave him again.
He curled around the bed, where she had been all night and tried pulling her close to him. But there was nothing there to hug and in his sleep, Hugh's eyebrows drew together in a frown.

Crawling to get away was pretty much a new low for herself. Regardless, when it came to Hugh and their personal situation she did feel like she needed to get her shit together but she was never prepared to do so. To be fair, when the world seemed to be against her in the most honest of ways Caroline still saw this situation with Hugh her one true down fall. Honestly, she just wasn't ready. She didn't know what she wasn't ready for or even if she really wasn't ready but.. She wasn't there yet. Regardless, that seemed to be thought for a faraway future, one in which she didn't find herself immediately crawling away from what she considered the elephant in the room.
When said elephant shuffled, as slight as it was, she felt her whole body freeze up in a cold shiver. Never had it occurred to her that Hugh could wake up while she was on her hands and knees shuffling away from him. This would have been a new low for her. One in which she didn't think she could ever remove herself from the embarrassment, really. She'd never been so fucked and blessed all at the same time but the moment that she realized he hadn't woken up, was the moment that she was putting her knees to the test and moving as fast -and silently- as possible.
Once outside of the doorway, she shuffled and stood up, frowning at herself for her labored breathing and moist hands. She really really did need to get her shit together if it felt like she was out of breath already. Mentally rolling her eyes at herself she took a brief moment to look down at herself as she walked towards the steps. Sleep clung to her eyelids and she felt like she needed to wash up in order to fully wake up, especially since the alcohol was clinging to her temples in the most annoyingly throbbing way and her breath smelled of stale beer.
Without much thinking, she tiptoed towards Hugh's own room, having automatically realized her location within the house without much thinking. Once inside, she practically jogged to his bathroom and towards his sink, frowning and rolling her eyes at her own reflection before quickly grabbing his toothbrush and preparing to brush her mouth. Even these actions made her frown, such rudeness being a familiar past memory.
But it seemed like the more she woke up and rushed to her exit- the more she remembered last night. The frown only deepened as she bent forward and washed her face before brushing her teeth. As she brushed her teeth with his toothbrush, she turned around and looked around the bathroom in slight nostalgia, leaning her ass against the counter.

If her scent hadn't be so strong and clinging to him like a second skin then Hugh would have said that last night had just been a very HD dream. It wasn't like he hadn't had very detailed dreams about Caroline before, very strange crazy dreams that could very much occur since he never knew what happened when it came to her, but never had he woke with her scent so strong.
Sometimes he would try to convince himself he got a whiff of it but with it this strong? Even on his own bare skin? Hugh knew it wasn't a dream. So where was she? His arm extended, still sleepy from the deep sleep that he had gone through and felt the bed getting cold. As if she had slipped away a while ago but not so long either.
That made his eyes frown and his vision cleared, his brain working to make him fully alert and wake up completely. He stretched out on the bed and then listened to any sounds in the room. He couldn't hear anything so he sat up, glanced at the shorts he was wearing and then to the opened bedroom door.
Her scent was fresh so he followed it, not bothering to grab a shirt on the way. Hugh didn't want to waste anymore time in case she was planning on leaving or worst, gone. With not knowing how long ago it was that Caroline had left the bed, Hugh felt his chest tightening with a pressure of anxiety. He didn't want to scout through the entire house and find it empty. He could follow her scent trail but once she got into a fast moving vehicle or into a too crowded area, then he'd lose her. Again.
But for now, her scent was still strong and going away from the elevators, and instead towards his room. Well, his old room. Since he had been sleeping in Caroline's old room and considered that mostly his. He had been sleeping there regularly since that was the room that smelled the most like her before.
He went inside the opened door, relief stabbing him in the heart when he heard the sink faucet inside the bedroom. Hugh moved farther in, around the bed until the bathroom came into view and he saw Caroline sitting on the counter brushing her teeth.
Hugh leaned against the wall, slightly sagging against it as the epiphany of her still being here hit home. He smiled just a tad more to himself than her. "Always keeping me on my toes." He mumbled to himself and then pointed to the faucet. "And raising my water bills."

Caroline brushed her teeth for a while longer, staring at the bathtub and the walls as she remembered things from their past. Events, conversations, and confessions. This bathroom held so much memories and she didn't know how to feel about it. Caroline had never build a relationship with anyone. Her earlier relationships had been forced- both physically and emotionally. Later on throughout the years, she'd learned to detach herself physically. To not get mentally or emotionally caught up with what was happening to her physically. It was the tool she was made to be regardless.
When Hugh came into her life, she had been desperate and she had done what she needed to do. Luckily it was something he needed as well and she hadn't thought of the consequences until later on. It wasn't until the day that he'd pushed her away after changing into his shifter that she had realized just how over her head she had been. Realization settled in and she realized that she was fucked and in the best possible way, she ran.
With these distant memories, the memories of the previous night had settled in as well, making her stomach feel heavy when she remembered that not only had they showered together and slept, but he'd asked her to be his. Hell, she felt butterflies in her stomach at the memory of first seeing him and even the sight of his car. She had been so wrapped up in her thoughts that she hadn't even realized he had entered the bathroom until he spoke.
By then, she didn't even flinch, instead she turned to give him a neutral stare. One that didn't' reveal anything about the chaos she felt at the moment within herself. For some reason seeing that smile on his face and that honest look of relief within his eyes made her want to puke. Slowly, she silently turned towards the sink and rinsed her mouth, washing her face in the process then looking into the mirror.
Just as silently as before, she ran her wet fingers in her hair to tame the frizz before sighing deeply. She felt like she was crashing. Caroline was crashing and she couldn't run from her problems anymore, so with a blink, she convinced herself that she was going to do what she did best- run towards them and fuck shit up in such a fashionable way that she'd end up feeling both destroyed and proud of herself all at the same time.
Sniffling lightly, she reached forward and turned both the cold and hot water to the center, cranking the flow to it's maximum before moving over to the shower and turning it on, doing the same for the tub and then, as she paused in the middle of the bathroom to stare openly at Hugh, she arched her brow and decided to flush the toilet.
By the time she made it back to him, the bathroom was starting to steam up rather quickly and it made the edges of her lips twitch in a smile that she wasn't letting out. "Don't look at me like that." She finally mumbled before brushing past him and pushing him aside with her shoulders rudely.

Hugh was tired of hiding his emotions towards Caroline. He didn't know why but they always said things they truly didn't mean in the beginning and went back and forth with each other until finally they exploded with the truth. Last night (now that he knew it really was reality and not just a dream) was a clear example of that. Sprouting lies. Storming off and away from each other until they were drawn back and back at it again, arguing and trying to crack each other open and make them vulnerable to one another.
Hugh didn't feel like going through that process today. Oh he knew that it would continue happening but for today, he wasn't going to. Hopefully she wouldn't drive him to a insane point where he just sprouted nonsense.
So while she stared blankly at him, Hugh left his face open and exposed...everything. The relief at seeing her there and the desire of her staying here with him. The slight amusement at the running water and the prowling desire that was always there for her was laid out in his gaze. He watched as she turned around, being reminded just a bit of yesterday's bath and felt his chest tighten once again, almost feeling a glimpse of her emotions through the thin bond that they shared.
But then his chest loosened a bit at the sight of his water bill rising like crazy this month as she moved about in the bathroom. Hugh didn't care about the bill. Didn't care if it overflowed and wet everything in this room. Everything could be replaced. Bills could be paid. But Caroline? Priceless.
He glanced around the bathroom, straightening from the wall and nodded at the room. "Very impressive." The amusement in his tone was apparent but as the steam starting to go near him, Hugh took a few steps back, not wanting her scent to get washed off by it.
Hugh glanced at his shoulder to where she pushed him and grinned, Caroline didn't see that because she had already behind him but it was there. He followed her out of the bathroom, not bothering with the water. It would drain on its own. The sink might flood a little but like he said. He'd fix everything that was damaged later because he wasn't going to chance having her scent be taken from his skin.
"But I want to." Hugh's honest voice told her and then he pointed downstairs. "Breakfast? I'm sure you're mouth is dry and your head is pulsing." But Hugh didn't move towards the elevators or the stairs, he stayed close to Caroline, taking in her scent and the warmth radiating from her skin.
Hugh missed this.

((You know that time out error thing or whatever that happens when you create your post and it doesn't go through and instead refreshes your page and all your shit is gone. Yeah, that happened.))
Caroline felt annoyed.
She wasn't ready for the closeness that Hugh seemed to be giving her and even though she was being cocky, she still had it in herself to run. But she knew it was too late for that and she couldn't just run all the time from him. Still, he was too close. Too close. Too close.
She felt drunk.
Making sure not to stumble, she continued to walk to the elevator and he continued to follow after her. Once she realized that he wasn't going to return to the bathroom, she stopped and turned to him. "How many times have you been dropped as a child?" She honestly questioned, giving him a look of sympathy before moving back into his room and turning off all the water. Frowning at how the humidity stuck to her skin and hair before turning back to him.
He was there, anyways.
"What are you thinking about? You keep looking at me like that and I swear I'm going to punch your face in an attempt to knock some sense into you."

((Blame it if it's bad on intoxication. Blame it if it's good on me.))
Hugh knew that his actions would probably annoy Caroline but he didn't quite care. She was here with him and he wanted to be next to her. After all. He wasn't competently sure when she would disappear on him again. Which was why Hugh decided that he was going to enjoy this while it lasted.
"Hmm?" Hugh hummed next to her, walking next to her towards the elevators, truly not caring about the water in the bathroom. He turned on his heel and continued to walk behind her, a amused expression on his face. "Quite a lot of times. Of course I am assuming that based on the person who was my mother. Who would very well drop a newborn in various occasions."
He smiled just a little bit at that before listening to his mate's words. "I'm thinking of you of course." Hugh raised a challenging brow before continuing. "Some sense? I'll probably need some because what we have isn't normal nor most of the time, healthy. Yet I can't stop thinking of you Caroline. I can't. You were gone." He pressed the elevator button again, now that they were near it.
"But you're here again. So what am I thinking of? Of ways to make sure that you'll stay with me." Hugh dipped his head to look at her more closely before straightening and shrugging his shoulders.
"So go ahead. Punch me. But I don't think that'll change the way that I'm thinking."

(My writing is rust)
This situation was too much for her. He was too much for her. Caroline couldn't even begin to put into words what was going through her mind at the stupidity that left his mouth so she decided not to even try. A small smile fell on her lips as the elevator doors closed and she crossed her arms in front of herself.
Hadn't he been the one to walk away from her? Push her away? She was sure that his actions had been a cowardly way of telling her that he didn't want her. She had been scared, so yes, she left. But she'd returned a couple of times to him because she didn't want to die. Was this why he was being this way with her? She was an easy fuck, easy on the eyes, and she wasn't expecting anything from him. She kept him alive when he was ready to die.
Was he regretting his past actions of wanting to die.
"You forced me away so don't come with this bullshit because I'm not some love sick teenage girl ready to fall head over heels. What happened to that one blonde girl? The day I broke the windows to your car? Was she not enough to break the bond?"
Caroline couldn't believe him even though a part of her was stirring up in all of the wrong places. "If you need me to stay alive just say so. But don't come with this bullshit story."

Hugh sighed and leaned against the elevator, unable to really take his eyes off of her even though he could start to feel her mood changing for the worst as usual. But even that, was something that he had seemed to missed. Hugh watched her from the corner of his eye, memorizing all the little things about Caroline like the false smile that covered her face, or the way she folded her arms in front her.
His lips thinned at her words and he wanted to get angry because he knew that to be a lie but at the same time, he didnt because that night had been a confusing night. "I never forced you away, not me as Hugh and not me as the jaguar, you ran away that night from me. It was a confusing night, I understand that but you dont get to say that I forced you away or that the way im acting now is just because I want to stay alive."
Hugh rolled his eyes, "Oh yes, the one night I try to get out and socialize-I'm a bad bad man. But you on the other hand can rub your sweet self all night against some stranger and its nothing to lift a eyebrow on. Right Caroline. By the way, you owe me three hundred for the windshield. As to what happened, nothing happened. She was freaked out after you left, which didnt really bother me so much as you disappearing once again, and I went home. Sorry I cant get you more angry by telling you I made her orgasm in bed all night. Maybe another time, love."
The door opened, Hugh moved halfway out, bringing his gaze to rest on her face. "I once thought you loved me. Until I got to really know you and I knew that would be close to impossible happening. You know of my story, of how I dont know how to love but I once told you, that you were the only person that I saw myself falling in love with. You were the only person who I thought, yes, maybe this is love. So please Caroline, say whatever harsh words you can think of, but dont go dimishing these feelings that I have for you that I've never had for anyone else in this world."
"You can say whatever else you want if that makes you feel better, but dont try to take this away from me. You're not just some pretty face to me. You're not just someone I need to be around for because I want to wake up the next day, you're not. So dont try to convince yourself otherwise on that. I cant make you do anything you dont want to do, but I'm here."
"If you want to use me so that you dont die, let me know and we'll schedule meetings. But dont try to say that I dont have these feelings for you because that is bullcrap Caroline and I'm sick of your bullcrap when it comes to this."

She didn't really have anything to say. Well, no, that was wrongly put. She had plenty to say but found no choice of words that she found pleasant enough to say. His words made her heart jump and sink, all while he looked mildly annoyed and extremely exotic. Caroline didn't think her mind should be planted on certain things, but shit just sort of happened.
The firmness of his eyes, the tightness in his jaw, the way he was shifted towards her, and even the messiness of his hair seemed to scream at her a billion of unpleasant thoughts that she didn't find amusing at all. But her body did and she had to clear her throat and shift in place in order to try to avoid showing how her mind had drifted and her body had reacted. She wasn't in heat, she had just missed him.
Hugh, this house, this stupid elevator... All the things that had made this place familiar and almost home-like. All the things that had made her feel comfortable enough to overdue her stay and wish it had lasted longer. She didn't know how he'd managed to do such a thing but she'd missed this place and it's sense of safety. In all honesty, she could see Hugh being stupid enough to believe that she'd enjoyed her time away. He was stupid enough to think that she was safe and throwing herself around just for the hell of it. No, Caroline never felt safe by herself. She was a whore. In her most primal state she was nothing more then a whore and she was not proud of that. She was not proud of the fact that she couldn't walk past any shifter without being assaulted. She wasn't proud of the fact that she needed to be owned in order to stay alive.
She wasn't proud of the way she'd forced herself into his life.
Sighing, she tried to gather all her thoughts into something to say because she knew she couldn't just stand there staring at him whilst looking like a fish out of water. Caroline didn't know what to do, so she blinked a couple of times and just stared at him blankly.
Love was such a whimsical word.
He'd never said anything about love before, maybe he had, but she hadn't thought it was directed at her in such a way, so she was shocked at his confession and unprepared for her own string of feelings to come crashing through her heart and mind. Clearing her throat, she decided that it was best to step out of the elevator but didn't make it much farther from him then she'd been already standing.
"I need a drink." Really, that was the best that she could say.

"A drink." He repeated. There was a little arch to his eyebrow that hinted at either annoyance at the fact that she avoided the question or wariness at the idea of having a drink at this time of day-especially when it was drinks the night before that had started all of this. Either way, Hugh's lip curled in a smile because no matter what emotion he was feeling at the moment-even this. Even this was something Hugh had missed.
Caroline just being Caroline.
Hugh eased the rest of his body away from the elevator so that it would finally close once Caroline had stepped out. Her scent travelled up to his nostrils and Hugh couldn't resist the way his body inhaled her scent in. As if his body wanted to cage her inside of him where he could have her always. Hugh exhaled through his lips, still looking down at Caroline and finding it hard to do much else.
"Well, you know where the kitchen is. You should eat something as well. I'll make breakfast and afterwards, we'll talk some more about this." Hugh's hand reached out for her wrist but he stopped himself just in time...for a few seconds it hesitated just a inch or two away from her skin until finally, Hugh twisted away from her and started to walk down the path.
He ran that same hand through his hair, rolling his neck to get out the tension that had suddenly built up there. He wanted to touch her, Hugh realize. Wanted to sleep with her again. Wanted to see that expression on her face again as she looked at him. Sighing, he pinched the bridge of his nose and entered the kitchen.
There were so many memories in this kitchen, sweet and twisted alike. He opened the fridge, pulled out the orange juice and the half filled vodka bottle on the side. Grabbing two cups, he filled it half and half and then added two cubes of ice each. He left one on the table for Caroline, even though he wouldn't be surprised if she just drank straight from the vodka bottle itself.
The mix drink tasted sweet on his tongue and Hugh knew that he'd need a lot more alcohol in his system if he was going to talk with Caroline and not snap at her, so he drowned the thing and started in on breakfast. "What do you feel like eating and don't say nothing. You've probably been eating only once a day at most. We got eggs, ham, cheese, bacon, spam, bread, salad shit, some left over potato salad from publix. Steak-as usual. Cereal. Cereal? There's fruits in there as well." Hugh crossed his arms in front of him as he leaned on the counter, his eyes on Caroline-once again.

Why was he so difficult? Seriously, out of all the things Caroline had to put up with on a daily, Hugh was always by far the most difficult and annoying thing. If it wasn't the smartass comments, it was that cocky expectant look- or his looks in general. Seriously, Caroline was surprised that she hadn't developed an addiction to over the counter painkillers by now.
She sighed deeply and grinded her teeth when he repeated her words. Must he sound so... Hugh-like? Well, obviously, yes, because he was himself. But in her opinion he could take himself and everything that made him himself and stick it up his own ass himself... Sighing deeply, Caroline closed her eyes tightly before deciding that she indeed needed a drink. Without further hesitation she ignored most of his words and headed towards the kitchen, choosing to wait until her drink was made so that she could jump on the counter and sit her not-so-happy ass by the sink.
She held back a groan, the ache in her body making itself noticed with her rough movements. Truth be told, he was right. She hadn't been eating well at all. Granted, she wouldn't admit it to him or even to herself but she'd put her body through a few tough obstacles within the time that she was gone. Drugs, alcohol, lack of food and sleep. She was surprised that the pain was still ignorable.
Caroline decided to lock eyes with him as she grabbed the drink that he had made her. With a small blink, she passed it under her nose, and finally broke eye contact as she turned her head backwards and took it down in one gulp. She smiled as he explained his idea of breakfast and then pulled the bottle towards her, along with a dirty coffee mug that laid on the counter nearby. Still smiling, she poured herself an unhealthy amount of vodka into her glass then placed the two items aside so she can grab her empty shot place that Hugh had made her and tilt it up as if offering cheers.
"First of all, don't look at me like that." She said lowly, smile still placed on her face as she moved the empty glass into the sink, forcing it slowly down the garbage disposal. "Seriously, unless you plan to do something about it calm those little fierce eyes of yours." She said in a light tone, turning her attention to the sink as she paused what she was saying and looked at Hugh once again.
"Orange juice counts as breakfast, right?" Caroline tilted her head, smiling as she noticed that her voice had taken the light girlish tone it always did when she KNEW she was about to be a douchebag and she loved it. Grabbing the coffee cup, she practically inhaled the vodka before pouring herself another glass, leaving the bottle almost empty besides her.
"Second of all," She said lightly, shifting on the counter as she brought her cup lightly to her lips, "I really don't like orange juice." She stated before flipping the switch of the disposal with the shot glass inside of it.

It was a bit too much for Hugh when she jumped on the counter. After all, it was such a throwback to the past and one of the things he had missed the most from Caroline. After all, it was the little things that stayed with you the longest. There were so many times where Caroline would be on the counter while Hugh would be leaning against it, drinking coffee in his half awake state. Or Caroline sitting on the counter, drinking liquor, while the whole house was a mess and the two of them usually covered in blood. Or Caroline moaning on the counter as he enjoyed her.
He saw her hand disappear into the sink but Hugh didn't say anything. Instead he smiled at her words. But it wasn't a sweet apologetic smile, it was a predator grin as he remembered just how easy it was to 'do something about it'. He wasn't of course, because then she would assume him to be like everyone else and quite frankly she already did see him as someone who only kept her along for her body-and Hugh didn't want that.
But the memory of her left such a sweet taste in his mouth that he couldn't help but lick his lips. "Hmm," he hummed, not at all doing something about his gaze on her. She would have to deal with it.
"On the contrary, orange juice does not count as breakfast. You need something in your stomach that doesn't consist of alcohol or little bites of foods." Hugh stared pointedly at his now near empty bottle and then back up at her face. Sitting on the counter, she was almost his height. It was something she liked. Seeing eye to eye with him. At least, that's what he had always thought.
The garbage disposal made him jump. But not out of surprise. Nah. He knew what Caroline was up to the moment her pretty little hand slipped into the hole with his cup. A cup that he actually liked. He had jumped so that the little shards of glass that started to jump out of the hole didn't dig themselves into Caroline's skin. Instead, now, he was right next to her. His back to the sink and all the glass that was spluttering out, while his arm was wrapped around her back. Not touching, just yet, but close enough that she had to feel the warmth. A shard flew into his back as tons of tiny other shards danced in the air.
"You know," Hugh reached for the coffee mug that was clad in her hands. But he bypassed it and instead, gently air brushed her hair. "I fucking liked that cup. My stepfather had given it to me. It was a set of a pair." He brushed his thumb over her lips, the palm of his hand hovering around her throat.
"I think I even told you that, one time." Hugh leaned forward, his shoulders keeping Caroline safe from harms way (even if just the sound was enough to hurt). His face was inches away from hers and he couldn't help but stare into those devious eyes of hers. "Hmm." He mumbled before switching the damn thing off.
"I think I'll take a steak. If you don't eat, I'll force feed you and I'll make sure you enjoy it. After all, you just destroyed one of my favorites. It's only fair." He moved away from her then and glanced at the sink. There were little shards everywhere and he knew he'd have to get someone in here to check it out later but one thing at a time.
Hugh grabbed a paper towel and wiped the sink down, discarding the little shards in the garbage bag. "Don't turn it back on," he warned as he stuck his fingers in the hole, ignoring the little pricks until he found the majority of the cup. It was hard to pull it, as shards dug into his fingers and there was no smooth surface, but soon enough, Hugh had to what looked like half the cup in the garbage.
He flipped the tap on and let the cool water run on his fingertips even as he used his nails to pick out the little shards from his skin. Hugh was silent as he took them off, getting the ones on his arms as well. He then carefully took off the shirt he was wearing and threw it in the garbage as well.
If there was any other glass shards, he'd find them later. He turned to Caroline, "Do you have any?" He didn't believe she had, but he could have been mistaken.

She swore that time froze when he jumped closer to her. Caroline hadn't expected him do move so quickly and she still hadn't been able to process why he'd done such a thing in the first place. She felt frozen in her spot, unable to look away from his eyes because he was still giving her that damn look. Hugh smelled even better up close and the scent that washed over her distracted her even more.
All previous feelings and thoughts left her body once again and she felt as if she was being washed up by whatever siren call he was putting out. Caroline felt dizzy and lightheaded and it wasn't until his palm hovered over her throat that she realized that her heart seemed to be malfunctioning and so did her lungs, she had forgotten the necessity that was breathing, honestly.
Gulping, her eyes lowered themselves to his lips and then finally, she noticed that she wasn't in any pain because he had shield her from all the glass shards that would have hit her. At that very moment she felt as empty as she felt overwhelmed. Why was he protecting her again? Why was he even looking at her that way? Didn't he know that she couldn't hold herself when he was acting this way? Didn't he know that every fiber of her being wanted his hand around her neck?
That was the Hugh that Caroline knew how to deal with. Not the Hugh that dropped the 'L' word and swore that he missed her. Why would he miss her? Less then a day around him and she was already being an uncontrollable pain? By why was she even questioning all of this? Because she missed him too. He made her feel safe and human. He saw her not as a toy, but as an equal.
Caroline was glad that her mouth felt heavy, otherwise she was sure that all her thoughts would have spilled out and Hugh would be hearing things that she wasn't even ready to admit to herself. He would know that she'd been scared, that she'd been used, that she didn't feel safe or clean. He would know that she ran away because she didn't know how to deal with what she had felt that night.
Unlike him, she didn't do love. She'd never seen what it looked like or even felt what it would feel like. She had no idea what it would even feel like until that night and the realization of it had made her run. She wouldn't admit it to herself and she wasn't ready to admit it to him. Nor was she able to tell him that she missed him.
Her vision swerved and she realized that tears had formed in her eyes. Clearing her throat, Caroline's reality settled back down on her shoulders when he moved away from her and she was hopefully that he didn't notice the shift in her behavior or the tears in her eyes.
In an attempt to cover her slip up, she quickly stood up the moment he gave her the space to be able to do so and quickly cleared her throat again. She felt panicked, trapped in her own feelings. Caroline realized she shouldn't have drank so rapidly on such an empty stomach and the realization made her mad at herself.
She should have known better by now.
"Well," She finally said, looking around as she placed her mug down on the counter. After a few seconds she walked over to the unbroken shot glass that was the pair to the one she had just broken. "Here, now we won't have a problem, right?" She questioned innocently as she tossed the second glass in the trashcan with enough force to break it.
Turning around to Hugh, she froze on whatever smartass comment she was going to shoot his way the moment she realized the trail of blood leaving the wound on his shoulder.
She didn't know what guided her, or why her actions seemed so bipolar at the moment (She blamed it on the alcohol) But without much thinking she stepped towards him and laced her fingers around his sides, feeling his toned chest as she moved to place a line of kisses on his back.
"Let me get that for you." She purred lightly against his skin as she bit into the glass shard, pulling it out of his shoulder.
(Did this throughout my day at work. Deal with any lose ends.)
