James came in from doing chores, the smell of horses and alfalfa clinging to him. He'd counted down the days until his wife would give birth, and today was the day. Today, she'd bring their daughter into the world. Today was the day he worried most about, for he could not predict when- or if - DJ would make an appearance. He so hoped the sick man would not show his face. But what . James went upstairs and set the cup of coffee he'd prepared for himself moments before, on the nightstand. He sat on the bed and kissed his wife's hair. He hoped she hadn't had any nightmares in he short couple of hours that he was gone - if she'd slept at all, anyway. He placed a hand on her swollen belly, so worried for her, the love of his life. "Darlin', are you alright?" He smiled at her, trying so hard to mask his worry. He had watched her. His goal today would be to make sure today was perfect, with no hitches or flaws. Ariella came upstairs, ready to assist the young mother in birthing her child. She'd brought a bowl of water and a washcloth, along with a few cool towels. She'd had three babies, so she knew what to do. James stayed by his beloved's side, watching as she displayed the most pained faces known to man. (( Jewel))

For the duration of her pregnancy, Slater made sure that Anna was safe. Whether it was the imminent threats of DJ or the times that the horses were visited by the pregnant woman, the body guard was always nearby. One time, DJ actually did emerge. But Ariella safely brought Anna and Red to the barn as Slater stayed behind, gris gris bag swinging around his neck as he subdued the man.
By the time Veronique decided to join the world, both men's wounds were long gone. Right now, Anna lied still in pain as contraction after contraction barreled over her. Slater was there, sitting in a chair he borrowed from the kitchen. He had his arms crossed, his expression revealing nothing other than the cold calculation he came into the Lupien home with. He watched Anna, heard James come the stairs, and braced himself for the miracle of birth. Since watching over Anna, he regained the fondness he had for her. She was the closest he had to a daughter, and he hoped that while he and her mother didn't get along too well, she felt the same about him. A piece of family they never got a chance to have.
"It hurts," Anna whimpered to James, her eyebrows scrunched together before a contraction – worse than the others – arched her back. It took her biting her tongue to keep from screaming too loud.
Slater had to took away.

James watched his wife give birth to their child, silently horrified by the scene. He had no idea why she was being so quiet. His own mother had described childbirth as something quite different than what he was witnessing in the current moment. He looked over at his mama, feeling totally unprepared all of a sudden.
He was glad, however, that Slater had been there for the pregnant woman. He was glad that DJ was able to be stopped. He was glad that his child would not come into this world while DJ was there. He didn't want her to have to face the bad man. Though his wounds had since healed, the thought of his daughter being hurt or even treated akin to her mother, by DJ at the very least, hurt his heart. In fact, it petrified him. But he smiled anyway, patiently waiting for Veronique to be born. He watched as Slater looked upon the scene with a cold gaze.
He moved his hand to her swollen belly, rubbing softly, hoping it would distract her from the pain. "I know, darlin'," he replied. "But it'll be over and you'll have our beautiful baby girl in your arms soon. Is there anythin' I can do for you?"

She didn't give birth. Not yet. It was just that the contractions were (literally) such a pain. And she wasn't being quiet. She refrained herself from screaming. Pained moans escaped her throat, followed shortly after shallow breaths of air.
At the mentioning of Veronique, her brows relaxed slightly. Uncharacteristically, Anna's sweaty hand reached up, then snagged James's fingers that were caressing her belly. There was a tight squeeze that he was given. "Just hold my hand." Her words were rushed. Desperate. Never had she given him a simple plea, let alone a command. Though this was definitely a different circumstance.

James sighed to calm himself, taking his wife's hand and complying with her wishes. He'd do anything for her, be it throwing himself in front of a speeding train or just simply holding hands with her. His gaze drifted between all the people in the room, until he heard the click of claws on the hardwood. When Red came up the stairs, Ariella was quick to lift him up into her arms. "I know, baby, you wanna see Mommy," she cooed, "but not right now. Soon your little sister will be here and then you can see her, I promise." She kissed his head and smiled. James kept holding Anna's hand, rubbing it with his free hand. 'You doin' alright, darlin'? Anythin' else I can do for you?' He asked this by way of their link. (( Jewel))
